Mint Install

When setting up Mint, we follow these steps:

  • Boot the computer from a USB. Pressing the F1 key during initialization gets you into the BIOS.
    • Double Click: Install Mint. The version that gets installed depends on the computer hardware.
    • Connect to wifi. Or, use Ethernet, which will make the downloading of files a little faster.
    • Install multi-media codecs.
    • Select the option to erase teh disc and install only Mint> It is important for our clients that the disc be wiped.
    • Set Country, keyboard, etc.
    • Important: Set up Personal and Computer ID
      • Your Name: YYY NNNN
      • Computer Name: CCC
      • User Name: UUUU NNNN
      • User Password
      • If asked to set the Set Secure Boot Password, we recommend making it the same as the User Password.
    • ReBoot
  • Install Mint: (takes about 20 mins.)
    • The computer tells you to remove the USB
    • The Update Manager usually updates itself.
    • System software updates then happen via the Update Manager
    • Check System Reports (lower right)
      • Do NOT update drivers
      • Set up system restore, Launch Timeshift
      • Do not update the Mint system

      • Or, Settings -> Light Locker -> Settings. Security tab, Auto Lock Session -> Never
  • Firefox:
    • Check default search engine is Google.
    • Set Home & tabs.
    • Put link to Google on desktop. Cntrl-Shift-Right Click.
  • Libre Office:
    • Check Writer & Calc work.
    • Put links on desktop.
